Availability

Expect the new 911 models to start arriving at U.S. Porsche Centers this fall, while the 911 Carrera GTS models will be available by the end of 2024. The current 911 Turbo, Turbo S, and GT3 RS models will continue into the 2025 model year with no changes in pricing.

The new 911 Carrera is now available to order, both as a Coupe and a Cabriolet with rear-wheel drive. If you’re looking for more options, the 911 Carrera GTS comes in both rear and all-wheel drive versions (911 Carrera GTS and 911 Carrera 4 GTS).

Keep in mind, the MSRP doesn’t include tax, title, registration, dealer charges, or a $1,995 delivery, processing, and handling fee.

Refreshed Exterior Design

Porsche has given the new 911 a sleek makeover, focusing on improving aerodynamics and performance. One of the standout changes is the model-specific front fascia. The 911 now features standard LED Matrix design headlights with the iconic four-point design, incorporating all light functions. This change allows for larger air intakes in the front fascia since the lights previously positioned there are now part of the headlights.

For the 911 Carrera GTS models, the front fascia has five visible, vertically aligned active air flaps and an additional flap on each side that closes off the bypass, not visible from the outside. These are paired with adaptive front diffusers in the underbody, a first for Porsche. These elements work together to manage airflow efficiently: when the car needs less power, the closed air flaps improve aerodynamics, and when more power is needed, like on a track, they channel a significant amount of air to the radiators. The sensors for the assistance systems are neatly integrated into a high-gloss area below the front license plate.

The rear of the car also sees significant updates. The newly designed rear light band, complete with “PORSCHE” lettering, emphasizes the car’s width and low stance. A new rear decklid grille with five strakes on each side blends seamlessly with the rear window and flows into the automatically extending, variable rear spoiler. The rear license plate is mounted higher, and the rear fascia is more streamlined. Model-specific exhaust systems are elegantly integrated into the pronounced diffuser fins. The 911 Carrera models can opt for a sport exhaust system, while the 911 Carrera GTS models come standard with a GTS-specific sport exhaust system.

For those looking to enhance performance even further, an optional Aerokit is available for the 911 Coupe models. This kit includes a SportDesign front fascia with a unique front spoiler lip, special side skirts, and a weight-optimized, fixed rear wing, all designed to reduce lift and boost performance.

Digital Cockpit and Extended Connectivity

When it comes to seating, Porsche offers the new 911 coupe models as standard with a pure two-seater setup, sans rear seats. However, for those who need a bit more space, there’s the option of a 2+2 seat configuration at no additional cost.

Inside, the blend of traditional 911 design DNA with modern technology is seamless. The Porsche Driver Experience ensures that key functions essential to the driver are within easy reach. These include the standard drive mode switch, an updated control stalk for managing assistance systems, and, for the first time in a 911, a start button conveniently placed to the left of the steering wheel.

For tech-savvy users, the center console boasts a cool feature: a storage compartment with a cooled area for smartphones, complete with an inductive phone charging pad.

Breaking tradition, the 911 now sports a fully digital instrument cluster, a 12.6-inch curved display that seamlessly integrates into the new operating and display concept. It’s highly customizable, offering up to seven different display views, including a classic display reminiscent of the historic five-tube design, with a centrally positioned tachometer, a hallmark of the 911 since its inception.

The Porsche Communication Management (PCM) continues to be the central hub for vehicle operation, now displayed on a high-resolution 10.9-inch screen. Drive modes and assistance systems have been optimized for easier customization, while new connectivity features have been added. Logging in with the Porsche ID via PCM is now simplified with a QR code.

Apple CarPlay® is more deeply integrated, allowing information from the system to be displayed in the instrument cluster, directly accessible from the Apple® ecosystem, including through the voice assistant Siri®. For the first time, video streaming is an option, available while the car is parked. Popular apps like Spotify® and Apple Music® can now be used as native apps within the PCM, eliminating the need for a connected smartphone.

Innovative Performance Hybrid

For the new 911 Carrera GTS models, Porsche’s engineers drew from their racing expertise as the foundation for the hybrid system concept. “We developed and tested various ideas and approaches to decide on a hybrid system that optimally suits the 911. The result is a unique powertrain that is well-integrated into the overall concept and enhances performance significantly,” said Frank Moser, Vice-President of the 911 and 718 model lines.

A key component of the powertrain in the 911 Carrera GTS is a new, reinforced eight-speed dual-clutch transmission (PDK) featuring an integrated, permanently excited synchronous motor. This motor supplements the power of the boxer engine at idle with up to 110 lb.-ft. of torque and generates up to 40 kW.

The 911 GTS also introduces a newly developed electrically driven turbocharger. Positioned between the compressor wheel and the turbine wheel, an integrated electric motor accelerates the turbocharger rapidly to generate boost. This electric motor also serves as a generator, capable of producing up to 11 kW using the exhaust gas stream. By eliminating the need for a wastegate, this electric turbocharger allows for the use of a single turbocharger, improving throttle response and performance.

Both the electrically driven turbocharger and the electric motor within the transmission are paired with a lightweight and compact high-voltage battery. Despite its small size, this battery can store up to 1.9 kWh of energy and operates at 400 volts, located under the front hood where the previous 12-volt battery resided. To optimize weight distribution, a lightweight lithium-ion battery now powers the 12-volt system and is situated behind the parcel shelf in the rear.

At the heart of the T-Hybrid powertrain is a newly developed 3.6-liter boxer engine. With enhancements such as a bore increase to 97 millimeters and a stroke enlargement to 81 millimeters, the engine’s displacement is raised by 0.6 liters compared to previous 911 Carrera GTS models. Equipped with VarioCam camshaft adjustment and roller rocker arm valve control, the engine maintains an ideal fuel and air combination across the entire engine speed range.

Alone, the new boxer engine produces 357 kW (478 hp) and 420 lb.-ft. of torque. With a total system power of 398 kW (532 hp) and 449 lb.-ft. of torque, the 911 Carrera GTS sees a power increase of 45 kW (59 hp) compared to its predecessor. Despite its performance boost, the hybrid system is designed to minimize weight increase, with the U.S. curb weight of the new 911 Carrera GTS Coupe increasing by a moderate 103 lbs.

Meanwhile, the 911 Carrera maintains its 3.0-liter twin-turbo boxer engine, now enhanced with the intercooler from the 911 Turbo models. This upgrade, coupled with turbochargers from the previous 911 Carrera GTS models, boosts the engine’s output to 290 kW (388 hp) and up to 331 lb.-ft. of torque. With these improvements, the 911 Carrera Coupe can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds (3.7 seconds with optional Sport Chrono Package) and reach a top track speed of 183 mph, representing an improvement of 0.1 second and 1 mph, respectively, over the previous model.

New Suspension and Aerodynamics

The suspension of the 911 Carrera GTS underwent significant upgrades. Rear axle steering is now included as standard, enhancing vehicle stability at higher speeds while also reducing the turning circle.

The optional Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC) roll-stabilization system has been integrated into the high-voltage system of the performance hybrid. This integration allows for an electro-hydraulic control system, making the PDCC system even more flexible and precise.

A standard sport suspension with adaptive dampers (PASM) and a 10-millimeter reduction in ride height compared to the standard 911 Carrera deliver the characteristic driving experience of GTS models.

For wheel options, the new 911 Carrera models offer a choice of seven different designs in 19-/20- or 20-/21-inch combinations. Notably, the 911 Carrera Exclusive Design wheels are now available with carbon fiber aeroblades, which can reduce drag coefficient and optimize efficiency.

In terms of tire and wheel size, the 911 Carrera GTS models come standard with 21-inch wheels at the rear, measuring 11.5 inches in width and fitted with 315/30 ZR 21 tires. At the front, 245/35 ZR 20 tires on 8.5 x 20-inch rims are mounted. The wider rear tires, 10 millimeters wider than the previous model, accommodate the increased power level of the new 911 Carrera GTS models, enhancing performance and traction.

Conclusion

Porsche has made significant updates to the latest generation of the iconic 911. The new 911 Carrera GTS marks a milestone as the first road-legal 911 model to incorporate a lightweight, performance-focused hybrid powertrain, anchored by a newly developed 3.6-liter engine. Accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in just 2.9 seconds – 0.3 seconds quicker than its predecessor – and boasting a top track speed of 194 mph, the 911 Carrera GTS Coupe sets a new standard for performance.

Not to be outdone, the 911 Carrera has also received enhancements. Powered by an updated version of the 3.0-liter twin-turbo boxer engine, it delivers even more power than before.

In addition to their enhanced powertrains, the new 911 models feature refreshed designs, improved aerodynamics, new color options, updated interiors, expanded standard equipment, and more extensive connectivity options.
